The game automatically puts your body away from the line of the wall, in order to avoid people who take advantage of mistakes. When you walk into the wall you even get an animation how you try to leave but start to just run through in pain and then falling to the ground, dead, with the corpse on the other side of the wall. But black-ice looks more "defensive", with its flatter walls, ice spikes and small windows, and stormglass is more ornate and decorative, and the only non-dlc build with big (like, really big) windows.
